Earlier this week I turned on my TV and there was Donald Trump congratulating himself on his handling of the coronavirus crisis. According to Don, his administration had done everything right and they were getting a lot of credit for that.
Small problem with that interpretation of reality.
Pretty much nobody is giving the Trump administration credit for their handling of the coronavirus crisis and that’s because Americans make up 4.25 percent of the world’s population, but according to Johns Hopkins University, we make up 25 percent of the world’s COVID-19 cases. We also currently lead the world in COVID-19 infections and deaths. We’re also setting records for new infections – 50,000 a day.
Woohoo, America is number one!
During the interview I watched, Trump also said he was “all for masks” and wouldn’t mind being seen in one even though his reluctance to wear one in public is well established. That being the case, I think it’s fair to say his commitment is a bit short of the 100 percent that “all for masks” implies.
Trump also said he tried one on and thought it made him look like the Lone Ranger, which is just confusing because Clayton Moore wore his mask over his eyes and I’m assuming Trump wore one over his nose and mouth, but as we all know when you assume you make an ass out of you and the president.
(The single most disturbing thing about that last paragraph is I didn’t have to look up the name of the actor who played the Lone Ranger, but couldn’t tell you the current location of my garage door opener which I misplace 2-3 times a week on average.)
In an earlier interview Trump suggested to the Wall Street Journal that people wore masks to show they disapprove of him, which is a logical conclusion as long as you just arrived from the planet Neptune and can’t think of any other possible reason somebody would want to wear a mask during a pandemic.
Before Trump’s Fantasy-Fest was over, he said he thought at some point the COVID-19 virus was just going to “sort of disappear” which is pretty much the same thing Trump thought before two million American caught it and nearly 130,000 Americans died from it.
Anyway…
Right after Trump finished outlining his current delusions about the coronavirus, some newscaster mentioned the Vice President’s visit to the “state of Arizona” and that bit of news served as a springboard to the cartoon you see at the top of this post.
I’d end this by saying “Stay safe, everybody” but Trump is planning to visit Mt. Rushmore today to celebrate Independence Day and masks and social distancing will not be required. So instead I’ll end this by saying, “Stay away from Mt. Rushmore, everybody.”
Enjoy your 4th of July weekend and try not to breathe on anybody.
The US probably leads in testing per capita. As far as deaths go, the US also probably leads in the number of elderly who are most susceptible to succumbing to this illness. Trump isn’t the only politician that doesn’t wear a mask. He is an idiot, but not because he doesn’t like wearing a mask. There is no real science being conducted yet, and the conclusions being drawn are not based on hard evidence. There is a lot of disagreement amongst the “experts”. And Fauci is a lifelong bureaucrat, not sure he spends much time in the lab. When the US reaches 250,000 deaths it will crack up to the Hong Kong flu- per capita.
