Managing: game strategy is just the tip of the iceberg
There are two jobs that everybody thinks they could do better than the guy currently doing it: President of the United States and managing a big league baseball team.
Recent events indicated everybody is half-right. But now I’m steering into politics and I want to talk about baseball instead.
Fans tend focus on the decisions a manager makes during a game because it’s the only part of managing we can see. But ask guys who play in the big leagues and they’ll tell you managing a game is only part of the job and nowhere near the most important.
The Royals recently hired a new manager, Mike Matheny, and I wrote a piece for the Kansas City Star listing six things Matheny has to do to be a success and game management was only a small part of that article.
