On Monday evening I watched live as DC law enforcement officers attacked a peaceful demonstration. One more time: the demonstrators were doing what they’ve been asked to do – protest peacefully – and the police provoked the confrontation.
Meanwhile, over at the White House Donald Trump was doing a tough guy act.
He called out the state governors for being weak and said if they weren’t going to call in the National Guard, he was going to send in the military whether the governors wanted them or not.
At first one of the CNN anchors speculated that the cops provoked the confrontation so Trump could have the right backdrop – riots in the streets – for his announcement.
Turns out it was even dumber than that.
Apparently Trump was upset because it was reported that he hid in a bunker when demonstrations got too close to the White House on Friday night. Bad optics for a “law and order” president.
Monday night Trump wanted to be seen walking across the street to St. John’s church for a photo op and the demonstrators were in the way.
So a bunch of peaceful protesters got tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets so Donald Trump could have his picture taken in front of a closed up church, holding a Bible whose contents clearly remain a mystery to him.
Near as I could tell, never went into the church, never opened the Bible, never prayed.
Maybe the rest of us should start.
Notice he didn't go INTO the church, probably realizing that the moment he put a toe across the threshold, the place would be struck by lightning and burn to the ground. :p
The first clue was the way he "fumbled" the Bible. He looked uncomfortable with it in his hand. :-(
