
On Tuesday morning the Kansas City Star ran a story about a Kansas man who recently drank a cleaning product based on advice he’d received, and although the Star did not identify where he got this stellar advice, feel free to speculate.
But wait, there’s more.
The Kansas Poison Control Center has reported a more than 40 percent increase in cleaning chemical cases and after Trump speculated about the possible benefits of injecting disinfectant into the human body, Maryland, Michigan, New York City, Illinois and Tennessee have reported an increase in activity at their poison control call centers.
Generally speaking, when people called up wanting to know if it was OK to drink a Clorox cocktail, they were told not to and advised to speak to a doctor before trying anything on their own.
While this seems like common sense – talk to somebody with some expertise before doing anything dumb – politicians aren’t following it.
Despite a shortage of medical authorities saying it’s OK to do so, the governor of Missouri has announced an easing of COVID-19 restrictions on May 4th and is trusting some of the same people who wonder about the health benefits of chugging Lysol to behave in an intelligent manner.
Man, just cannot see a flaw in that plan.
Lots of people have called for more testing to get us out of this mess and that inspired the cartoon above: clearly, we need a lot more testing although maybe not the kind most people are referring to.
If we’re going to start reopening businesses and rely on people’s common sense to avoid another wave of coronavirus infections, recent events indicate common sense ain’t all that common.
