So I’m driving down the street in Surprise, Arizona and see some crazy-looking street person with long hair and beard to match, walking along wearing nothing but shorts and flip flops—the kind of guy who should be carrying a sign that says, “REPENT…THE END IS NEAR!”—and I’m thinking, “
A lot of this is from stuff I wrote at the time, so I just had to go back and figure out which stories to repeat, which stories to delete and which stories to add. I remember funny baseball stories in great detail, but can't remember if I took my allergy pill this morning.
I remember GMDM taking heat for getting a shortstop in the Greinke trade because they already had one in place. Moore said, "Shortstops don't grow on trees." He knew exactly what he had with Esky.
I adored watching Esky play SS. My layman's eye test says he was every bit as good as Bobby Baseball is now.
But no player who ever went to bat for the Royals frustrated me more than Alcides Escobar, who was a perfectly fine hitter when he went to right field or just generally tried to hit singles, etc.
He could have hit .270 or better.
But every once in a while he'd go yard and then he would think he was Babe Ruth, try to jack everything, and kill many a rally by overswinging and striking out.
A lot of that's on Esky, but baseball deserves some blame too: the league went crazy for home runs and rewarded the guys that hit them. At one point Ned Yost said, "It's almost like singles don't matter anymore."
Lee, these stories are great so far. Hope enough interest is there for you to keep them coming.
It's fun to remember those good times.
Thanks for reminding us of an amazing Royals run back in 14' & win in 15'. What a fun time. Wow, do you remember details.

Good stories!
Glad you're enjoying them.

But oh - that glove.
