I have returned to Kansas City after a vacation in my home state – California – and in just two short weeks I’d forgotten what it felt like to breathe air the consistency of warm tapioca. (Actually, it wasn’t at all humid when I arrived at the World’s Most Convenient Airport — Kansas City International — so of course we’re tearing it down and replacing it, because apparently we want all our airports attached to shopping malls, but I thought of the warm tapioca joke before I arrived and wouldn’t want to waste it.)
I grew up Long Beach, CA and moved to Lee’s Summit in 1989. Now I have lived here for longer than I lived there, but I still miss it. It’s a great place to live if you have money. If California was on Yelp it would have $$$$$. It’s great to visit and vacation though.
Having been born in NYC and spent most of my life in KC, I can easily support your "thesis that the latter is by far the best for living. I've often postulated that "NYC is a great place to visit but no place to raise a family".

“Kansas City is where everyone has dinner with their folks on Sunday night.” Bob Sprenger, sometime in the 70s
