Hey Lee, I'm new to your columns and really enjoying a look back to the Beatles, and all the details you found. When they became a big hit in the US, my friends and I preferred The Monkeys, imagine that!
Jen, glad you're enjoying the Beatles stuff. No surprise you preferred the Monkees. They had Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart writing songs for them, some terrific studio musicians performing them, plus they had that cool Pontiac GTO Monkeemobile and a TV show. The entertainment industry decided to shove the Monkees down our throats and it worked. I watched their show religiously.
Side note: Years later I drove by a hitchhiker with hair to his waist and thought, "That's Peter Tork." (Real name Peter Thorkelson.) Went back and picked him up and he was on his way to his chiropractor and didn't have a car. A good reminder to save some money.
