Too bad your history was so brief. If you want to know why the Palestinians/Arabs/Muslims might be having a problem with Jews, check out that inconvenient Balfour Declaration of 1917, where “Great” Britain stole land from Palestine with the intent that the Jews that settled there would only occupy a well-delineated portion and would not take any more land from Palestine. So how did that work out? Hypothetically speaking, would you be just a little pissed off if you lived in Lawrence and some Quantrill guy came into town to run you and your neighbors out of your houses, burned them down, stole your oxen and horses, burned your crops, … hypothetically?
If we’re getting in the Wayback Machine, why stop time traveling in 1917?
I’ve attached a couple links to articles about the Jewish connection to Israel going back to the Flintstones and another article from a guy on the other side saying the Jews are using twisted logic to claim a Historic Right to Israel.
People disagree (and violently) over which facts and dates matter.
I’ve also attached links to a couple Wikipedia articles about when sovereign states were formed and dissolved. (Who the hell are these people who post weird stuff on Wikipedia?) Anyway…the point being what year did we have the maps right?
1916?
A bunch of countries have been formed and dissolved since then and I’m guessing there were winners and losers and happy people and unhappy people, but not all the unhappy people resorted to terrorism.
My cartoon said something negative about Israel (they hurt their own image) but it’s not the only thing I think on the subject and Israel’s taking a lot of heat right now so I tried to provide some context that people who weren’t alive or weren’t paying attention in 1972 and '76 might not have.
Couldn’t find my family history after two minutes of searching, but my grandfather Theodore was living in Lawrence about the time of Quantrill’s Raid and knowing the rest of my family’s politics, I’m surprised they weren’t riding with him.
I doubt we’re going to agree on this one and that’s OK. Everybody’s free to decide what facts they find meaningful and reach their own conclusions and opinions.
This is an action- packed column with some good cartoons, Lee. The D. Trump mischief makes it easy to be on the side of truth, justice and the American way (and the Ukraine War has an obvious villain) but with the Israel/Palestine war, it's not so easy to take sides. My personal view of Israel has changed; the amount of death and famine is out of proportion and to see the images is heartbreaking.
PS Your little Mom and her broken TV work around is so funny. She deserves a new TV for Mother's Day!
Totally agree that the Israel/Palestine issue is incredibly complicated and obviously we're not the first ones to reach that conclusion. Also, my mom does have a new TV, but she's reached that age where her biggest pleasure in life is complaining and a new TV didn't change that.
Great column, Lee. Very thought-provoking. I remember the Munich Olympics, but failed to connect the dots as you've done... and I definitely didn't remember/know that Netanyahu's brother died in the "Raid on Entebbe" - that definitely could explain Netanyahu's motivations. (But as we know - and you've shown in many comics - one person's "motivations" may not be the best course of action for a country.)
Thanks, Bob. I was pretty much in the same boat; I didn't know about Netanyahu's brother either or how the Munich Olympics affected Israel's policies toward terrorism. Doesn't make either of them right and as you point out personal vengeance is a bad reason for having a national policy, but it helps to understand why someone acts the way they do even when you think they're wrong.
I must admit the whole situation has me flummoxed. I have Jewish friends, of the boomer generation and older for the most part, who are, not surprisingly, solidly behind Israel although none of them care for Netanyahu and say he should be removed. These are people who are for the most part wild eyed liberals, so it's just odd to me that in this case the conservatives are behind Israel.
My progressive gentile friends, particularly the younger ones, are generally on the side of Palestine and some of what they're saying borders on antisemitism. I've tried to explain to them that plenty of Israelis don't support Netanyahu or agree with what he does.
I really think that the United States and the other countries involved in arranging the establishment of the state of Israel should have given up their OWN land, not somebody else's. My Jewish friends tell me that Jews have lived in the area where Israel was established for thousands of years, but I can't help wondering if they wouldn't have been safer someplace else.
Intelligent, well-informed people have been trying to solve this one for decades and I don't expect it to be resolved anytime soon. And as we've seen, even if you reach a compromise, all it takes is one unhappy person on either side to do something violent and get things going again. Unfortunately, I agree with Erika; you could give the Jews their own country in Bumfuck, Wyoming and someone would find a reason to attack them.

That's a very interesting idea. Maybe you are right but now it's too late.
Elaine, we are “safe” nowhere on Earth.
